The “John Phelps” EP is my most honest, introspective and emotive project to date. At the beginning of 2020, I knew that I needed to put out a project that for myself, but also knew the ability music has to change the lives of people who find it.
“American Spirits” pulls the listener into my world, I like to think that it gives the listener everything this EP is about in the first 30 seconds. Combining elements of Hip Hop with alternative rock and ambient pads, I describe the challenges of love during a pandemic as well as the loss of friends and family members gone too soon.
Songs like “Just Like That”, “Centipede” and “Ready Willing” combine lush instrumentals, all produced by me, with lyrics that vary in subject-matter from the biographical to the braggadocios. On all of these songs, I played all of the instruments you hear as well as programmed the drums and recorded everything at my home studio.
Not only did I want to give people music to dance and escape into but songs like “Streetlights”, “You Could Runaway…” and “The Frame” are deeply personal records where I address aspects of my life such as my growing up in a broken home, substance abuse and failed relationships. These records were cathartic for me to write because many of these topics were never discussed in any of my other songs.
The project finishes off with “Rumors” an acoustic, emo-inspired track that gives the full range of my musical influence and ability as well as bridging the gap between listeners who are passionate about music that defies genre.
